I have a strong urge to DM my d&d group when I get back from Japan. We haven’t played in my world since September and I have big plans. I think I should take a notebook with me on my trip so I can sketch out some stuff.
I’d like to run a session that focuses on the group visiting a mining town at the behest of a powerful duchess that employs them from time to time. They’ll be sent to retrieve a mysterious artifact uncovered by the miners. Unbeknownst to them, the artifact has awakened an ancient evil that has destroyed the miner’s minds and turned them into a cthulu-esque madness cult/monsters.
I’m thinking hellboy-like frog creatures, madness checks, ghosts and hallucinations and some sort of tentacled beastie to challenge them for the prize. The only thing I have written so far is the group visiting the town saloon and interacting with the miners for awhile, suddenly the lights go out and when they come back on the saloon is revealed to actually be a bloodbath and all the miners they thought they were interacting with are long dead, their skins shed as they turned into horror creatures.
I think this is a good start to the adventure and it’ll really freak them out. Any other D&D players have any thoughts on setting a creepy mood or neat challenges?
